In addition, Elvis Presley's If I Can Dream sits securely in seventh position, meaning four of the albums in the Top 10 belong to posthumous musicians.

Bowie's Blackstar album takes second place on the album chart with 345,000 combined sales, according to the Official Charts Company's quarterly figures.

The Ziggy Stardust singer released the album just weeks before he died of cancer in January.

Two of his other albums - 2002's Best Of Bowie and 2014's Nothing Has Changed (The Very Best of Bowie) - are at positions No 4 and No 10 respectively.

Bowie has claimed the most positions on the quarterly chart, with a total of six placings in the Top 40.

Adele is at No 1 with her hit album, 25, which has notched up combined sales of 406,000 this year.

Canadian pop star Justin Bieber claims third position with his album, Purpose.

While it may not have topped the album chart, it is the most-streamed album of 2016 so far.

Danish band Lukas Graham are leading the way on the singles chart. Their song 7 Years boasts combined chart sales of 857,000.

Bieber's hit song Love Yourself, whose No 1 run on the charts was knocked off briefly by the NHS Choir at Christmas, is in second position on the singles chart.

It is also the most-streamed song of the year so far with more than 40 million plays.

His fellow Canadian, Shawn Mendes, is third on the chart with his song Stitches.
