TRIBUTES have been paid to a long-serving councillor who died suddenly.

Barbara Sloan, who represented Peterlee on Durham County Council, was found dead at her home.

Relatives had become concerned after noticing her curtains were shut on Friday lunchtime.

Coun Sloan, who was 75, had been a Liberal Democrat councillor for 24 years.

Having previously served on Easington District Council, she was elected to the county council in May 2008.

Family and colleagues hailed Coun Sloan, known by friends as ‘Babs’, as a popular people’s champion.

Sister Eunice Jacques, 81, said: “It’s very sad. I can’t believe it.”

Married to Peter, she was the proud mother of sons Peter and Andrew and three grandchildren.

The cause of death will be investigated by the coroner.
