Dedicated charity volunteer in for national award

A dedicated volunteer who helps run a Hartlepool disability group is in the running for a national award.

Allison McLean, who helps to run Kev’s Klub, has been nominated in the National Diversity Awards by husband Kev for her commitment to the social club despite having a painful muscle wasting condition herself called Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, or CMT for short.

The National Diversity Awards are a prestigious black tie event celebrating the excellent achievements of grass root communities that tackle social exclusion issues.

The awards ceremony will be held in Liverpool, in September, and Allison is nominated in the Community Organisation Award – Disability category.

Allison, who had to give up work as an activities co-ordinator at a care home because of her condition, said: “The club keeps me going. We are small but we have got a big heart.

“We are open to everybody over 17 and it gives people their independence and if they have carers a bit of respite for a couple of hours.”

More than 20 people have voted for Allison on the awards website so far. She added: “Some of the endorsements about me are tear-jerking.”

Kev’s Klub is based at Newholme Court and is open on Wednesday nights from 6pm-9pm.
