COUNCIL bosses say their grass sports grounds across Hartlepool will be shut this weekend due to the recent bad weather.
All Hartlepool Borough Council-owned pitches across town closed Saturday and Sunday after bosses took the decision on safety grounds and to protect playing surfaces from serious damage.
Green spaces development officer Richard Harlanderson said: “The pitches are completely overwhelmed by water and to play on them would severely damage them for the rest of the season.
“We are also worried that the pitches could be dangerous to people playing on them.
“We have considered the weather for the next couple of days and although it is an improving situation we do not believe there is sufficient time for the enormous amount of water on the pitches to dry up.
“Therefore, we feel that the closure of all of our pitches this weekend is the only option available to us. We are sorry for any inconvenience this might cause, but we hope that people will understand the reasoning behind our decision.”
