A PENSIONER had a lucky escape after the car he was driving suddenly caught fire.

The 65-year-old was driving a three-wheeled Robin Rialto when the engine compartment caught light.

Two fire engines from Hartlepool’s Stranton Station and the Headland attended the fire in Pounder Place, in the West View area of the town, at around 3pm on Wednesday.

It is believed the blaze was caused by an electrical fault.

The engine compartment was destroyed and damage was also caused to the inside of the vehicle.

The driver was checked over by paramedics at the scene, but was not hurt.
