A DRIVER escaped a horror smash without injury after crashing into a tree on the outskirts of Hartlepool.

Emergency services rushed to the A689 after a blue Peugeot came off the carriageway, crashed into a tree and flipped onto its roof.

Fortunately the driver of the car escaped serious injuries, but was still taken to hospital as a precaution to be checked out.

The incident happened on the carriageway heading into town near Newton Bewley at around 11.25am yesterday.

The driver wasn’t trapped in the vehicle and managed to free himself from the wreckage, but police, paramedics and firefighters all attended the scene.

One lane was blocked for a short period while police dealt with the incident.
