John Hyde has been jailed for six years for rape.

John Hyde attacked his victim in a house, Teesside Crown Court heard.

“He first tried to kiss her,” said Joanne Kidd, prosecuting. “She formed the impression he was drunk and tried to push him away, telling him she was not interested.

“Hyde pushed her against a wall in the hallway, then manhandled her to the floor.”

The court heard the victim’s blood was later found on Hyde’s clothes.

“The victim told her mother the next day,” added Ms Kidd. “Hyde was arrested the following day.

“At first, he claimed he had been with his sister at the time of the rape, but changed his account when the forensic evidence was put to him.”

Hyde, 36, of Hall Crescent, Horden, Peterlee, admitted rape.

He has previous convictions for offences of dishonesty and assault of a different woman.

Stephen Constantine, defending, said: “There is nothing I can say in his favour about the offence, other than he has had the good sense to plead guilty to it.

“Mr Hyde does have previous convictions, but nothing of a sexual nature, and apart from the most recent assault, he has kept out of trouble since 2004.

“He has been holding down a job as a driver with a skip hire firm.”

Judge Tony Briggs jailed Hyde for six years.

The judge told him: “This was a nasty and unpleasant offence of rape carried out in humiliating circumstances.

“You have pleaded guilty, which has at least saved your victim the ordeal of giving evidence in court.

“However, your guilty plea was only on the morning of the trial, so she will have lived with the thought of giving evidence for many months.”

Hyde must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
