ONE of the region’s leading employers has heaped praise on a college after Government figures placed it in the top 10 performing establishments in the country for apprentices.

Hartlepool College of Further Education was ranked in the top 10 for “overall and timely achievement” in figures released by the Skills Funding Agency.

The college, in Stockton Street, Hartlepool, was the only college in the North East to make the top 10 thanks to a success rate of 86.4 per cent for 460 apprentices who passed through its doors – 12 per cent higher than the national average.

Caterpillar, in Peterlee, takes apprentices from the college in a variety of roles.

Derrick Merrington, Caterpillar’s apprenticeship manager, said: “The college has an excellent reputation, and it comes as little surprise to see it ranked within the top 10 in the country. We have had a high proportion of excellent apprentices from the college over the years, and as one of our key philosophies is to promote from within they know the opportunity is there for them to progress up the ladder.”

Principal Darren Hankey said: “This is fantastic news, we are over the moon to be named in the top 10 in the entire country.”
