YOUNGSTERS have donated food to locals in need as part of their harvest festival.

Rift House Primary School holds a yearly harvest festival, and the goods are then given out to people in the community.

Parents and friends of the Hartlepool school donate as much as they can, then the children go out with teachers and support staff to distribute the donations.

Headteacher David Turner said: “The people who received the food were very grateful. We always try to get to the residential home. Next time we’re going to try and get the parents involved, we all know that times are hard.”

This year the amount of food donated filled 20 carrier bags and they were delivered throughout the area by the enthusiastic children.

The bags also contained vegetables grown in the school’s newly-developed garden.

During the traditional harvest festival assembly, the school also served soup made from the vegetables which had been grown by the children themselves.
