A STUDENT has been short listed from more than 2,000 entries for a further education award.

Peterlee student Jayde Kirkup, 16, is in with a chance of winning a MacBook Pro or £1,000 of John Lewis vouchers after taking part in the competition held jointly by the FE Week newspaper and qualifications awarding body NCFE.

Students from all over the county were asked to send in a 500-word article explaining what made them go to college, along with their hopes, fears and aspiration.

The 16-year-old, health and social care student, sent in her story after starting at Peterlee’s East Durham College in September last year.

Jayde has already come in for praise from her lecturers when their college won a student of the month award in November.

Her lecturer Julie Knowles, said at the time: “Jayde has an amazingly positive outlook which works in her favour, as does her passion and enthusiasm for her course.

“Her effort and commitment have been all the more remarkable as she has cerebral palsy.

“Jayde works really well in group activities.

“She is a sociable, kind, hard-working young person who does everything in her power to not let her disability be a barrier to what she wants to achieve

“She is an inspirational person who is a pleasure to teach.”
