STUDENTS took a step back in time to celebrate glamour.

The 1940s was the theme of the North East Inter-College Hair and Beauty Competitions 2015, which was held at East Durham College.

Seven other colleges from the region took their students along to put their hair and beauty skills to the test.

Two competitions ran on the day with a 1940s-themed beauty skills event and an evening elegance hairdressing competition.

Becky Skinner from Hartlepool College of Further Education and East Durham College’s Laura Dovaston were announced as the winners of the hair competition.

A panel of judges presided over the day and the winners in the beauty event were Helen Pritchard from Darlington College and Natalie Sairns from Bishop Auckland College.

The four students will now go onto the grand final at Newcastle College in April.

East Durham College hairdressing lecturer and competition organiser Angela Johnston, said: “The day was a huge success and I want to thank all the staff, judges and students for coming along and making it happen.

“Everyone involved had a great day, and the level of both hair and beauty skills on show was fantastic, both competitions were so tight.

“We have some real talent coming through these colleges in the North East, which is brilliant for the area.”
