AN artistic schoolboy scooped himself a cracking prize in a hotel competition.
The Douglas Hotel, in Grange Road, Hartlepool, held a colouring competition for children over the Easter weekend.
Youngsters who went to the hotel with their families for lunches and Sunday dinners were given the chance to colour in an Easter-themed picture.
Jude Thompson, aged seven, used a variety of different colours to “neatly” colour in his picture.
And it was impressive enough to stand out from the rest of the entries when judged by another customer.
He bagged himself a 2ft Easter egg worth £45, and struggled to carry it home with him due to its weight.
Mally Davis, breakfast chef at The Douglas Hotel, said: “We decided to do an Easter Competition as people came in for their Sunday or Saturday lunches and gave all the children a colouring in picture to do.
“We bought a big massive Easter egg which was about 2ft tall as the prize for the winner.
“About 30 kids took part.
“When all the entries were in we got one of the customers to judge the contest for us.
“The lady picked jude’s picture because he’d used about 20 different colours and he’d done it very neatly.
“It was really very good and it stood out from the rest so i think that’s why he was picked.”
He added: “It was just a way for us to involve all the kids.
“They all seemed really chuffed to be taking part anyway.
“The little boy who won came down to collect his prize when we’d told him he’d won and he was really happy.
“The egg was massive and he could hardly carry it out with him!
“He wanted to eat it there and then – it would have lasted me about four weeks.
“He did a really good job and we were all really proud of him as was his mam.
“It’ll be nice for him to see himself in the paper, and hopefully he’ll remember it when he’s older.”
