Nine-year-old Ethan died last week, eight days after he was hit by a car on Marina Way, Hartlepool.

He had spent more than a week fighting for life but unfortunately his injuries were too severe and his parents Paul Owens and Lisa Cooper made the heart-breaking decision to turn off his life support machine.

Jesmond Gardens Primary School, where Ethan was a much-loved pupil, has said it will close on the day of Ethan’s funeral on Wednesday, March 22, as a mark of respect.

A letter from head teacher Jane Loomes sent out to parents and carers, which the school also put on its Facebook pages, said: “As you are very much aware, our local community is having to cope with the sad loss of one of our children, Ethan Owens.

“We have been informed that the funeral is to take place on Wednesday 22nd March. As I am sure you appreciate, our staff wish to attend.

“Following discussion with our Governing Body and the family, I have taken the decision to close the school for the day as a mark of respect to Ethan, his family and friends.
