FORMER Hartlepool United coach Kevin Sheedy is battling cancer.

The Irishman, who was assistant manager to Mike Newell at Victoria Park in 2002-03, revealed yesterday that he has been diagnosed with bowel cancer and is due to undergo surgery this week.

In a statement released on Everton FC’s website, where he current works as an academy coach, the 52-year-old said: “It is not ideal but I have to remain positive.”

Officials at Victoria Park were quick to join the well-wishers backing the former Republic of Ireland winger in his battle.

A Pools spokesman said: “We were sorry to hear the news about Kevin, and it goes without saying that everyone at Victoria Park wishes him well.

“He was a very popular member of staff in his time with us and we wish him every success with his treatment.”
