THE Race for Life has turned into an annual tradition for a town family running in memory of a much-missed dad and granddad.

Derek Heward died aged 64 four years ago after losing his cancer fight, and every year since then his family have headed for Seaton Carew to run in his honour.

His widow June, 69, was joined by daughters Mandy Wilcock, 44, and 41-year-old Michelle Heward on the run, along with grandchildren Maddie Henson, eight, Layney Henson, six, and four-year-old Joe Wilcock.

The family, who all live in the Park Road area of Hartlepool, had specially-produced T-shirts bearing Derek’s name.

Mandy said: “He died on June 6, and usually the Race for Life is run around his anniversary.

“This year, because of the Jubilee, it’s a bit later but we are always determined to do it.”

Michelle added: “It is very emotional, when you look around at the start and see all of the people running for people they have lost.

“But it is great to see so many people taking part to try and do their bit to help.”
