An investigation will get under way this morning into the cause of a blaze in an unoccupied house.

Four appliances, including two from Stranton Fire Station, and a hydro platform were called to Lister Street in Hartlepool at 6.30pm yesterday after the fire was spotted in the first floor of the terrace house.

Officers wearing breathing apparatus and water jets were used to tackle the blaze, which had spread to the roof.

It is thought no one has lived in the property, off York Road, for around a year.

Police and fire investigators are due to return to the address today as an investigation is launched into the cause.

The Stranton crew were also called to Oval Grange in the ton at 8.30pm after a car caught fire, with the cause believed to be accidental.

Anyone with information which can help the inquiry into either incident can contact Cleveland Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
