Fire started in family home

A COUPLE tackled a fire themselves after arsonists broke into their family home and started a blaze.

Police are now investigating the fire in Sedgemoor Way, in Billingham’s Low Grange Estate.

The couple’s four children are said to usually be at the address but were staying with friends or family at the time.

The incident happened at 5.50am on Saturday.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “It’s believed that someone broke into the house and then set a fire which, fortunately, the couple living there managed to extinguish themselves.”

A black handbag with a broken gold clasp containing bank cards and a black purse, was taken.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Stockton CID on the non-emergency 101 number or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
