Fires could have been ‘catastrophic’

A PROBE has been launched into the cause of five grass fires set along a cycle path.

Fire chiefs say it was only a matter of time before the fires would have spread to a nearby wooden fence and farmer’s field, leading to potentially “catastrophic” consequences.

Peterlee Fire Station firefighters attended the fires at 2.30pm on Friday in Station Road, Shotton Colliery.

Watch manager Ian Moore said: “We managed to put them out before the consequences got much worse – it could have been catastrophic.”
