A HARTLEPOOL beach has been given an award by a campaign group.

The town’s Seaton Carew beach is the proud owner of a Keep Britain Tidy Seaside Award – an accolade which rewards and recognises the highest standards in England.

Seaton was one of 112 beaches in the country to have scooped the gong.

Other North-East resorts to receive the same title include Cullercoats, Whitley Bay and Tynemouth Longsands, all in North Tyneside, and Sandhaven beach in South Tyneside.

Richard McIlwain, programmes director for the charity Keep Britain Tidy, said: “It’s fantastic news for everyone who loves visiting the seaside that more than 160 awards have been won, which guarantees the public the best facilities and the cleanest beaches this summer.

”Keep Britain Tidy is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee and over the past 60 years we have tirelessly campaigned to improve the quality of our local environment.

“The sight of the Seaside Award flying gives visitors the reassurance that they’ll have a great time.

“We have some fantastic coastline and we know that communities up and down the country love their beaches.”
