HEAVY rain is causing flooding and disruption across Hartlepool.

Localised flooding with water 2ft-deep in some places has been reported in Brenda Road, Warren Road, Bishop Cuthbert and around the town centre.

The A179 was closed at around 1.30pm on Saturday between Hart Village and the A19 because of flooding, but re-opened at around 5pm.

Hazardous conditions have also been reported around the A19 at Wolviston due to the amount of standing water in the area.

New Road in Billingham was also closed.

A number of other roads have been affected by flooding, but remain passable with care.

Emergency services and local authorities are dealing with localised flooding across Cleveland as drains are unable to cope with the volume of water.

Cleveland Police says many roads in the region are affected by standing water and spray from moving cars.

The Met Office says the worst of Saturday’s downpours are over and there is no indication that rivers in the area will flood.

Drivers should put their lights on and watch their speed given the wet road conditions.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for rain in Hartlepool on Saturday telling people to expect disruption and to take care when out.

Some rain is forecast for Sunday, but it is not expected to be as heavy as Saturday.
