A former Hartlepool man honoured for charity work has died

Tom McAlpine, who was given the award for his services to mental healthcare across the nation, died peacefully at home yesterday.

Tom, father of Coronation Street actress Jennie McAlpine who plays Fiz in the soap, and his partner, Linda Wilson, both originally from Hartlepool, worked for the Manchester-based charity, Moodswings.

The charity's Facebook page, said: "We are sad to inform you that our beloved Chair Tom McAlpine OBE, passed away peacefully at home yesterday.

"It is a great shock and to all who knew him a great loss. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

"We will be continuing the great work and cause that he was so passionate about and recognised for."

Over the years Tom and Linda had returned many times to Hartlepool, including holding fund-raising events and setting up a counselling service.
