Ross spent only a year at Victoria Park with his time in the North East plagued by injury and homesickness.

After making just 23 appearances for Pools, Ross moved back to Scotland and has enjoyed a successful managerial career north of the border.

He took over at Alloa Athletic in December 2015 and quickly impressed, taking the Wasps to second in Scottish League One before departing for St Mirren.

And Ross' time in Paisley has seen his stock grow considerably, with the 41-year-old guiding the Buddies to the Championship title this season.

That saw Ross handed the PFA Scotland Manager of the Year award ahead of Celtic's Brendan Rodgers as speculation connected him with several vacancies in England.

He was reportedly considered for the job at Charlton Athletic and was a potential replacement for Derek McInnes had the Aberdeen manager left to join Sunderland in the summer.

But the Scot may now be set for a move with Ipswich given permission to speak to Ross as they look to appoint a successor to Mick McCarthy.
