George leads the way on how to get a job

A man who left school with few qualifications has secured himself a job - with the enterprise organisation that originally put him on the right path.

Peterlee man George Manser was out of education, unemployed, and “lost”. He enrolled on a 12-week employability course, run by East Durham Business Service and learned how to search for jobs, write CVs, use best practice for interviews and did team-building exercises.

Shortly after, he began to volunteer for the organisation and his efforts did not go unnoticed.

He was delighted to be offered a job with EDBS as a business administration apprentice for 12 months.

George impressed his bosses so much, he was offered a full-time job as administrator and assistant programme tutor.

He said: “I finally feel like I know where I’m going, and it’s a great feeling to be helping people who are in the same position as I was.”

EDBS is now running an employability course called Durham Works. It is being in conjunction with Durham County Council, for people aged 16 to 24 who are not in education, training, or employment.

Denise Fielding said: “George is proof that our employability courses do work and should spur on other young people to give them a chance.”
