TWO dedicated volunteers are set for a close shave after bravely signing up for a painful fundraiser.
Hartlepool RNLI volunteers Ken Hay and Gavin Heaton will be joining their crew members and dozens of others at a fundraising event tomorrow night.
And the pair are set to steal the show after bravely agreeing to get their chests waxed on stage.
Ken, 32, and Gavin, 30, both from Hartlepool, will be helping to raise vital cash for the town charity at tomorrow’s event - but that doesn’t stop them from feeling the nerves ahead of the painful wax.
“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t regretting signing up now,” joked Ken, a scaffolder by day who has volunteered for the RNLI for the last 13 years.
“I’ve obviously never had it done before and all I’m hearing is horror stories.”
Ken, who lives in the town centre area of Hartlepool with wife, Tracey, 33, and their son Joshua, three, added: “Me and Gavin are both quite nervous.
“He only joined the RNLI about three months ago so this is some initiation for him.
“But in all seriousness, anything we raise will be better than nothing.”
The waxing won’t be the only form of entertainment on offer at the fundraiser at Hartlepool Smallcrafts Club, at Hartlepool Marina tomorrow night.
Popular band the Passion Killers will be live on stage and raffles will also help to raise cash.
Mike Craddy, lifeboat operations manager, has helped to organise the fundraiser and said any money raised will provide a huge boost for the charity.
“Money raised from this sort of event is essential for us,” he said.
“Without the money raised by members of the public we couldn’t do our job.
“The people of Hartlepool are always fantastic in supporting our fundraising events and hopefully we will get a good turn out.”
Tomorrow night’s event kicks off at 7.30pm.
Tickets are priced at £5 and can be bought from the Smallcrafts Club.
They will also be available on the door.
