CHAMPIONSHIP-winning girls were set to run out in front of around 45,000 rugby fans today.

The Year 8 pupils at Dene Community School, in Manor Way, Peterlee, are playing at Twickenham, in London, after winning a county competition.

They will scrum down at the home of English rugby during the half-time break in the annual Army v Navy match.

And they will be ready for their daunting task after receiving coaching from the English Ladies team before kick off.

Philippa Curtis, a teacher at the school, said: “This is not only an outstanding achievement for the girls, but a huge opportunity and experience.”

The girls qualified for the national showcase after winning a competition at Maiden Castle on March 23 before being victorious in a regional tournament at Ripon Rugby Club on May 18.

They are representing the North-East and Yorkshire at today’s event.

The team is made up of Emily Liddell, Sophie James, Jodie Wylie, Ellie Lauderdale, Danielle Brown, Natasha Dalgarno, Abbie Smith, Britney Kirkup, Megan McNally and Mia White.
