Giving women a sporting chance

WOMEN are being reminded about the launch of a new sports project.

Peterlee Leisure Centre, in St Cuthbert’s Way, Peterlee, will be the venue for the launch of the East Durham Belles project tomorrow.

It will run from 1pm until 5pm and hopes to encourage 1,500 women to become more physically active over the next three years.

During the launch event, women will be able to find out how to get involved in a number of sporting activities.

These include swimming, rowing, running, cycling and a triathlon.

The project will provide crèche and transport facilities in order to help overcome barriers that can prevent women from joining in sessions.

Hubs will be developed across east Durham in Wingate, Easington, Peterlee, Seaham, Blackhall and Wheatley Hill where a series of fun challenges such as 5km runs, coast-to-coast cycle challenges and try-a-triathlon will be introduced to motivate and inspire women to participate.

To pre-register, contact Steph Masterman at Wingate and Station Town Family Centre, in Partridge Terrace, Wingate, on (01429) 835241 or email
