BIG-HEARTED guests at the Hartlepool Mail Sports Awards have given a boost to a fund to help a brave little boy.
The beautiful flowers which adorned the tables at last week’s awards, held at the Hardwick Hall Hotel in Sedgefield, were sold off at the end of a fantastic night.
Thanks to generous guests, £110 was raised which has been given to the Callum’s Dream appeal.
The Hartlepool Mail. in a joint campaign with the Hartlepool charity Epilepsy Outlook, started the appeal in July to raise the £5,000 needed to give Hartlepool youngster Callum Smith, aged 23 months, a sensory room.
But within four weeks of launching the appeal, we had topped the £5,000 mark and reached £10,000 within two months.
Epilepsy Outlook project manager Jacqui Gettings said: “It is fantastic that the organisers thought of the appeal. This will take the total to more than £11,000 and something like this donation keeps the appeal in the spotlight, even though the target has already been hit.”
Jacqui said the money could be used for the regular trips to hospital which need to be made by Callum’s parents Zoe Neesam, 21, and Luke Smith, 23.
Callum’s life has been filled with hospital visits and 26 per cent of his time in the world has involved trips to hospital.
He suffers from a string of problems including epilepsy, reflux problems, dystonia, hypertonia, problems with swallowing, and visual impairment.
He also has an inability to hold his airways open, secretion problems and global developmental delay which means he can not hold his head up.
And in the past few days, he has been in hospital while he fights a virus.
Jacqui added: “They have spent weeks in hospitals in the past where the facilities may be limited and it can be costly.
“This money will hopefully be able to help them.”
l People can give donations to the Epilepsy Outlook charity shops at 199 York Road, and 104 Oxford Road, both in Hartlepool.
Or they can pay it straight into the Lloyds TSB branch in York Road.
