Hartlepool Akela is still going strong 25 years on

Our thanks and congratulations go to Margaret Elliott who spotted our Memory Lane photographic feature about scouts and cubs.

Margaret was akela in 1991.

Our spread turned the clock back to 1990s Hartlepool. One of the images showed Akela pictured in June 1991 at the 18th Hartlepool St Paul’s Cubs.

We asked for more details, especially as to who the person was in the photograph.

Margaret emailed to say it was the Hartlepool cub pack celebrating 75 years of cub scouting.

She added: “I am the Akela and still am” and then explained more on why she made the pages of the Hartlepool Mail 25 years ago.

“In the 75th year of cub scouting we were challenged to make a flag and fly it in a prominent place. The flag was flown from the Mail offices.

“In this our 100th year of cub scouting we have been doing a lot of 100 challenges.”

One event was the presentation of a 100-year neckerchief and badge to the then ceremonial Mayor of Hartlepool Mary Fleet.

“We continue to have exciting and thrilling activities in scouting. We are always looking for new members,” said Margaret.

Margaret would love to hear from would-be Beavers who are 6 and 7 years old, Cubs aged 8 to 10 ½, and Scouts 10½ to 14 years. All enquiries should be to [email protected]

Kevin Fox also gets our thanks for responding to another photo.

It showed a flag-holding pair of scouts pictured during the 75th cub scout anniversary celebrations in December 1991.

He said it showed Alex Smiles on the left and another boy called Thubron.
