A CHEERLEADING academy which needs £5,000 to achieve its national competition dream has taken a massive step forward in its aims.
Support has already flooded in for the Hartlepool Hawks cheerleading academy since we told how members had launched a fundraising campaign.
The Hawks need the sum to reach the national finals of a cheerleading competition which will be held at Telford, in Shropshire.
Bosses say that competing against the very best would be an absolute dream for the students, who have already won a string of titles at a regional championship held recently in Newcastle.
But the trip relies on the money being raised to take 45 young dancers to the nationals on Saturday, April 4, and Sunday, April 5. And just days after we published their plea for help, the Hawks raised £3,000 at the first fundraising event they held.
Seven teams of Hawks have qualified for the prestigious tournament and that means 45 Hartlepool cheerleaders aged from four to 19 years are all hoping to get to Shropshire. Hawks founder Rebecca Taylor said the programme of fundraising events started last weekend when the academy held a 12-hour sponsored tumble alongside other clubs, including the Aeronaughts Trampoline Club.
Rebecca added: “There were 74 cheerleaders, aged between four and 16 years. They tumbled their hearts out at the Hawks nest from 1pm till 1am and have together managed to raise £3,000.
“The event was a great success.”
Now more fundraisers are on the way.
On Sunday, February 8, a fundraising night will be held from 5pm to 9pm at Owton Manor Social Club. Tickets are £3 and Rebecca said: “This night will include a showcase by the Hawks, fun and games, an auction, bingo, raffles and a disco. It is going to be a fun packed night for all the family.”
A third event on Friday, February 13, will be a race night.
Rebecca said: “It is from 7pm until late. Tickets are £3 at Travellers Rest pub.
“We invite everyone to come along to our fundraising events to help our athletes’ dreams come true. Also any donations of any kind would be greatly appreciated and help us get that one step closer to achieving our goal.”
