A Pools fan was in for a shock when he emerged from the church after getting married – as he was greeted by the club’s popular mascot.
H’Angus the Monkey was invited to the wedding of Mark and Jennifer Carroll as a surprise for the groom, who is a huge Pools supporter.
And when the newly-married couple came out of St Luke’s Church, in Tunstall Avenue, Hartlepool, H’Angus was there to cover them in confetti before posing for photographs.
The surprise was organised by Jennifer, 28, and new husband Mark, 36, said “it topped the whole day off”.
He said: “It was a big surprise for me, as I didn’t know anything about it and it had all been organised by Jennifer.
“It was kept quiet, and I didn’t know about it until I stepped out of the church and was greeted by him.

“It was brilliant to have a bit of Hartlepool United as part of my wedding day, and it was a bit surreal.
“He was standing there with the confetti and shook my hand. It took me aback a bit, and topped the whole day off.”
H’Angus found his way onto some of the couple’s official wedding photos, while he also posed behind the wheel of the wedding car as he pretended to be a getaway driver.
Jennifer, who works as a staff nurse at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, is not an avid football fan, but arranged the mascot surprise to complete a ‘fantastic day’.
Mark, who works for Hartlepool Borough Council, added: “There were a few Pools fans at the wedding, and it was a really nice touch.
“I go to virtually all of the home and away games, and Jennifer is a bit of a football widow.
“She takes an interest in the scores so she knows what mood I’m going to be in when I get home, but she’s not a big football fan.
“It was a nice touch from her to organise it all, and just completed what was a fantastic day.
“After the season Hartlepool United had just had, as well, this was a nice end to it.
“I thought football wouldn’t be involved in the day, but Jennifer knows how much the club means to be, and it was great of her to make it happen.”
After the wedding, the couple enjoyed a week-long honeymoon in Venice.
