Hartlepool cycling grandad says a 60-mile thank you to the hospital which treated his grandson's cancer

Mike, 70,who now hails from Lowestoft, joined five other family members and friends for a challenge which took him from Blackpool to Manchester.

Two years ago, his 18-year-old grandson Robby was diagnosed with cancer, and received “wonderful support and care” from The Christie which is a specialist cancer hospital in Manchester.

It resulted in Robby’s treatment progressing well and to show their appreciation, the team of six including son Stephen, daughter Alison and three of Stephen’s friends tackled the ride.

They were riding in an event that covers 60 miles from Manchester, along Lancashire lanes and to the South Promenade in Blackpool. But Mike is no stranger to the roads.

Just before his Blackpool ride, Mike returned home from his eighth Land’s End to John O’Groats “End to End” ride, which was 874 miles in seven days.

Mike’s own total is now £18,000 from his eight rides. He belongs to the Velo Club Baracchi in Lowestoft and also Hartlepool Cycling Club in his old home town, keeping in touch also with West Hartlepool Rugby Club.
