A HARTLEPOOL shop has been crowned as the upper crust in a bakery firm’s national awards.
A Greggs shop in the town has been named the “Best in the UK” at the firm’s annual competition final.
The shop, in Powlett Road, won the title ahead of almost 1,700 other Greggs shops across the country.
The shop received the award based on its excellent all-round performance during the last year, including in customer service, shop standards, teamwork and sales.
Shop manager Jackie Toward said: “When our names were called out, we were literally speechless. I never imagined we would win.”
Her colleague, Paula Dobson, added: “We just want to carry on providing the best possible service for our local customers with a smile on our faces.”
In its fourth year, the competition saw shops awarded points on a weekly basis across a number of categories.
Shops that made it to the final rounds then received up to six unannounced visits by area managers, Greggs chief executive Roger Whiteside and retail director Raymond Reynolds, to assess standards.
As part of the reward for the winning shop, board members from Greggs’ head office donned an apron and hairnet to take up the regular staff’s duties.
Mr Reynolds said: “This is an incredible achievement by Jackie, Paula and all of their colleagues, it’s obvious how much they enjoy serving their local community and how committed they are to working to a particular standard.
“This award celebrates the excellent retail standards the team have created and they should all be extremely proud of themselves, just as we are to have them in our business.
“Having spent a day on the shop floor, we really appreciate the hard work and dedication they put in to offer our customers fresh food every day.”
