A group which was set up to enjoy the company of friends - and wonderful days out - is celebrating its fifth birthday.

Hartlepool-based Butterflies was first set up by Barbara Scott in an effort to spice up her own social life and meet new people.

“My life was passing me by,” admitted Barabara.

But all that has changed ever since and Butterflies is a Hartlepool success story.

Barbara added: “In the five years Butterflies has been going, so many friendships have been forged - even a few romances.

“We have nights in, nights out, trips to the cinema or the theatre, or just shopping trips.

“Some just like to come for a coffee and chat and they are such a lovely group of people.”

Although the group is mainly made up of women - “single, married, divorced” - a few men come along as well.

They all get the chance to enjoy trips to popular tourist destinations, and Barbara added: “We have been to Edinburgh Tattoo, Liverpool, York.

“We have even had holidays abroad, which is hard to do if you are on your own and also expensive.

“Not everyone can afford these trips, but we book well in advance so members can save.

“We have recently been to Whitby for the ‘60s weekend and got dressed up. Also, we love dressing up for the Goth Weekend.”

But instead of resting on their laurels, the group is organising bigger things for next year.

“We are planning Whitby, Knaresbrough , Dublin and hopefully Prague,” said Barbara.

And she explained the difference that the group had made to people in the Hartlepool area.

“Butterflies has changed so many lives - mine especially and I have so many new friends and kept my old ones too .

“We now meet at Jackson’s Wharf where Mathew and his staff look after us all very well.

“We are very friendly - but it is a big step for some.”

Meetings are held at 11.30am on Saturdays and more members would be welcome to the group which attracts up to 100 people.
