Hartlepool midfielder rues points that were thrown away

Nicky Featherstone says Hartlepool United's anguish at being relegated from the Football League has been heightened by the fact they have thrown away so many points.

Thirteen times this season Pools have led 1-0 only to go on to draw or lose.

On six occasions, Pools have lost from winning positions (18 points) and seven times they have ended up drawing (14 points).

A total of 32 points have been squandered, 20 under Craig Hignett and 12 under Dave Jones.

Had Pools kept them all they would have finished the season fourth – even if they had retained just half, they would have ended 15th.

“Dropping points from winning positions have been so costly,” said Featherstone, who explained that the squad were devastated.

“There were a few tears to be fair, it’s hurt a lot of people.

“But it’s not been lost in the last two weeks, it’s been the amount of points we’ve dropped from winning positions.

“If we’d only just taken three of them we’d have been safe.

“The 30-odd points we’ve had in winning positions we would not be here.”
