A MOTORIST remains fighting for his life after his car crashed into a lamp-post on the A19.

The 24-year-old man, from Hartlepool, remains in a critical but stable condition at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough following the smash.

It happened around 12.30am on Friday, 300 yards south of Easington services and caused the carriageway to be closed for four hours.

The man was driving a Peugeot 206, which left the road on the northbound carriageway and collided with the lamp-post.

Police say he was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries and his condition was described as critical but stable.

Two fire engines from Peterlee Fire Station were sent to the incident and crew members had to cut the man from the wreckage, spending an hour at the scene.

Any witnesses are asked to call Durham Police on 101.
