Makayla, 25, and Kyle are still in hospital but family members who have travelled to France to be with them have said on social media their conditions are starting to improve.

Makayla, who is said to have suffered internal injuries and numerous broken bones, has taken her first small steps.

The message posted on behalf of both families on a Facebook page started by friends to support them said: “Makayla is making progress day by day, some of her broken bones are starting to repair with the help of a back brace which supports her back and neck/head.

“She is slowly taking small steps to begin to start walking again, and doctors hope progress will continue in more coming weeks.”

The families hailed the heartfelt care and support provided by the doctors and nurses.

Little Kyle, who suffered injuries to his head, leg and hip, is being cared for in another hospital from Makayla. He is also showing amazing fight and has started to come around.

The message, posted on the Facebook page Thinking of Makayla and her Family, added: “He is such a beautiful brave strong little boy.

“Slowly, day by day Kyle started to wake, he can now recognise the voices of family members, and when sang to he will move his hands and fingers.

“It’s going to be a long road to recovery for Kyle but we hope and pray that positive progress will continue.”

The family also passed on thanks from Makayla for all the fundraising going on back home and said she was “lost for words”.

Around £15,000 has been raised from online donation pages and scores of sponsored activities and collections.

Owton Manor Social Club, in Wynyard Road, is holding a fundraiser on Friday night featuring top Freddie Mercury tribute act Billy West and singer and dance Sean McNicholas.

Tickets are £5.
