EXPERTS on nutrition and diets have told how they make a difference to hundreds of people across Hartlepool every day.

Anna Lumsdon and Emma Smith are making massive differences to people living with problems such as diabetes, obesity and those who are under weight.

The often unsung heroes of the health world use the science of nutrition and utilise it to help people manage their health conditions.

Anna said: “It can be people with gastro conditions, with weight management issues and it can be across the two sites of the University Hospital of Hartlepool and the University Hospital of North Tees.

Up to eight people can be seen in clinics held either at the hospitals or in GP surgeries and Anna said treatment was “all about finding the right plan for someone, and finding the plan that makes a difference”.

The best part of her job, she said, was “seeing people come in with whatever their condition is, assessing their diet, following it up and seeing it work for them”.

Anna, from South Tyneside, has been with the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust since 2008 and always in the same role.

She is a diabetes specialist dietician and said part of her role was to empower the patient to manage their condition themselves.

She added: “We provide them with the information they need to make changes to their lifestyle.”

Emma, from Hartlepool, is a diatetic assistant, is there to provide ongoing support and has been with the trust for more than six years.

Their department has enjoyed previous success in the awards. Lisa Doughty lifted the long term achievement award last year for the way she has raised awareness of diabetes and helped thousands of people to get the correct treatment.

Anna urged people to nominate for this year’s awards and said it provided recognition of the excellent work that many people did across all aspects of the health service in Hartlepool.

Our awards are now up and running and aim to give deserved reward to health heroes across town.

Our event will culminate in a sparkling finals night at the Hardwick Hall Hotel in Sedgefield on , on June 18.

But first, we want those nominations.
