A POPULAR pub has closed its doors while it undergoes a major refurbishment programme.

The Fens Hotel, in Hartlepool’s Catcote Road, has closed while the inside and the outside is completely revamped for pug goers.

The work is being jointly funded by the publican Graham Jewson and brewery Enterprise Inns, the largest pub owner in the UK.

As well as work to improve the interior and exterior, the changes will also see a home cooked menu introduced. The site has been fenced off while work gets underway and the project, which started in May, is expected to last around five weeks in total.

A spokesman for Enterprise Inns, said “The exciting refurbishment work that is currently being undertaken at The Fens is a joint investment between ourselves and the publicans Mr and Mrs Jewson.

“This great community pub is being totally refurbished internally and externally and a home cooked food menu will be introduced.

“We hope members of the local community will visit once the work has been completed to show their support for Mr and Mrs Jewson.”

The work is being carried out by Medlock, who are a specialist fit out, refurb and building contractor.

The firm operates throughout the UK carrying out a range of projects and their latest project is the Fens Hotel, which is located next to a busy shopping parade off Catcote Road. Enterprise Inns is the UK’s largest pub owner with an estate of 5,500 pubs.
