Kelly Mclean, a higher learning teaching assistant at Springwell School, said: “The Arch Bishop of York programme involves learning lots about citizenship and how to improve your community.

“It’s motto is ‘be the change you want to be’. The children have organised it all themselves and they had a vote where they decided they were going to do it for Abbie’s Love.

“They have been fabulous. Quite often we get people donating to us so it is nice for the children to be able to do something for somebody else.”

The pupils have invited a member of Abbie’s Love to visit the school on a future date to present them with the proceeds of the day.
