A COLLEGE with an outstanding sporting pedigree has become the latest great backer of a Hartlepool Mail awards.

Hartlepool Sixth Form College has come on board as
a sponsor of our sports awards.

The college is backing the Young Sports Personality of the Year section and principal Alex Fau-Goodwin explained why sporting links were so important.

He said sports students at the college were “challenged” in every aspect of their college lives.

He added: “They are expected to challenge themselves to achieve the highest grades in their academic study, whilst pursuing their sporting potential.

“The students will be stretched throughout their two years at the college, ensuring that they develop the relevant employability skills to secure their preferred progression to university or employment.”

The outlook has certainly paid dividends with the college achieving tremendous results.

Its girls’ under-19 futsal team won the national finals in Birmingham, beating Henley College and Truro College along the way.

Within the college, there are four academies which cover male and female football, male rugby and female netball.

Last season, the rugby academy were top in the region again for the eighth year in succession.

Since the academies were first set up they have flourished.

On the academic side, the colleges A level PE results significantly exceeded national benchmarks and every student on the BTEC Sport and Exercise Science course achieved a place at their first choice university.

The deadline for nominations in this year’s Hartlepool Mail sports awards is fast
approaching and we still want to find more worthy contenders.

So come on. Send in the names of those people who deserve to be honoured.

Once we pass the deadline, the competition will reach the judging stage. And the shortlisted entrants will move on to the finals night where we will reveal the winners.

However, there is still time for you to make all the difference and fill in those nomination forms.

Do it either on this page, or online at the Hartlepool Mail website at www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk, and go to the sports section.
