Staff at a Hartlepool store had a “grand” time and more when they took part in the latest Race for Life event.

For they not only enjoyed themselves, they also raised a lot of money for charity.

Selina Wilson, community champion at Tesco Extra, said about 50 colleagues from the Burn Road store, along with their families, supported the annual fundraising event.

“Our sponsor money is just starting to roll in” said Selina, “but we should reach around £1,100 as a store effort.

“The day itself raised an estimated £48,500 for Cancer Research UK in the North East.

“We had quite a few colleagues who ran the 5km, with Debbie Keers being our best finisher at 27.5 minutes.

“Angie Dawson, a cancer survivor, and a popular colleague in store, was able to run part of the race, and was supported by her two daughters Beth and Evie, and grand daughter Emmie.

“The atmosphere was amazing, with everyone supporting each other.

“We also had colleagues Gill Bradley and Andrea Metcalfe volunteering and keeping everyone motivated, whilst Angie’s partner and son-in-law manned the water stations.

“It was a fantastic effort by everyone involved and a real sense of community, and I can only encourage more people to get involved next year.”
