An enterprising young hair stylist from Hartlepool has cut herself a new career as a salon owner after opening her first business in the town.

Lucy Jane, 25, has launched Lucy Jane Hairdressing on Murray Street after receiving a £6,500 business loan from Virgin StartUp, with help from start-up support agency, TEDCO Business Support.

The new salon could be the first of many new ventures for the young entrepreneur as Lucy eyes up future expansion using her 10 years of experience in the hairdressing and beauty trade.

Lucy Jane said: “I started my career directly from school and have developed my skills over nearly a decade as a colour and hair extensions specialist before progressing into salon management just over four years ago. I’ve worked hard to build up a regular client base and although I knew I needed the push to open my own business, the timing just never seemed to be quite right.

“Fate intervened of course and when my former salon was put under new management last year I felt it was finally the kick I needed to pursue my dreams of setting up and running the kind of business I knew I was capable of.”

Lucy Jane contacted TEDCO Business Support to discuss some of the options open to individuals considering setting up their business. Lucy was assigned her own business advisor to guide her through the Ready for Business programme, an investment readiness scheme designed to help enterprising individuals start-up a new enterprise.

Lucy said: “My business advisor, Bill Hartshorne, was a great support to me in the early days of setting up Lucy Jane Hairdressing. He not only helped me refine my business plan and look at the administrative support I would need but he also put me in touch with Virgin StartUp to apply for a much-needed business loan. I need the additional capital so I could sign the lease on the business premises I had already located.”

Through the Ready for Business programme, Bill and Lucy worked collaboratively to get the business ready to start the application stage for a Virgin StartUp loan. Lucy Jane Hairdressing successfully received £6,500, which along with additional private financing, could fund the necessary set up costs required to open the doors of the salon and carry out renovations.

Bill Hartshorne, TEDCO Business Advisor said: “Lucy was a real joy to work with from the start – dedicated, committed and absolutely clear on what she wanted to achieve from her business.”
