Hartlepool war memorial added to protected list
War memorials in Hartlepool have now been listed with Historic England as part of a pledge to protect memorials across the country.
The memorials in Haswell and Greatham have been recognised for their historic and architectural importance by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport on the advice of Historic England.
The historical has pledged to protect 2,500 memorials across the country by 2018, to mark the centenary of the First World War.
The memorials were built by communities following the conflict.
Historic England, together with the War Memorial Trust and Civic Voice is now offering advice, grants and training, to support today’s communities to submit applications to have their local war memorials listed and repaired where necessary.
