Hartlepool yacht club to launch Dementia Awareness Week

People are invited to join in a number of activities across Hartlepool to raise awareness of dementia starting this weekend.

Hartlepool United monkey mascot H’Angus will attend a launch event on Saturday to mark the start of national Dementia Awareness Week which runs until May 21.

A programme of activities have been put together by Hartlepool council’s sport and recreation service with a range of partners.

The week is due to get off to a good start at the Tees and Hartlepool Yacht Club, Fleet Avenue, as it hosts a Move a Memory Mile community walk and a range of family activities.

Registration for the walk begins at 9.30am for a 10.30am start with three distances available at 1.5 mile, three miles and 4.5 miles.

Staff and elderly residents from Queens Meadow Care Home, on Stockton Road, will be taking part in the walk.

Manager Julie Armstrong said: “We’d love to see as many people as possible join us.”

On Monday, May 16, people can give their bodies an MOT at a fitness activity session Brierton Sports Centre, Catcote Road, from 1pm-3pm. Information and support on vascular dementia will be available.

People can give Nordic walking a try at Summerhill Country Park on Thursday, May 19, at 1pm-3pm. All are welcome.

The programme of activities will conclude on Friday, May 20, with a Celebrating Dementia Friendly Hartlepool event - at the Borough Hall, from 1pm-4pm.
