The group, dubbed DFC – which stands for Dance Fit Crew – are the only one from the region to reach the national finals.

Jay Mullen, a teaching assistant at the Grosvenor Street school, who leads the dance group, said: “They’re all really excited.

The children are just so made up to get through, and especially to be the only ones from the region.

“They’re a bit nervous too because it’s the first time we’ve ever entered a competition, but we’re just hoping to do everyone proud.”

The group of 24 boys and girls, from Year 3 to Year 6, have put together a Little Red Riding Hood-themed routine, which will see them dance to Bastille’s Of The Night.

The Great Big Dance Off is a popular national dance competition open to schools all across England and Wales, and is the only national dance competition aimed solely at schools.

Mr Mullen added: “We usually practice once a week every Friday, but we’ve been fitting in extra rehearsals during break times and dinner times as well.

“It would just be overwhelming to bring the trophy home. Just to get there and be the only group from the region is such a huge achievement for the kids, but if they went on to win the competition, they’d just be over the moon.

“We’ve themed the routine around our school summer show, which is Little Red Riding Hood and we’re going to be dancing to Bastille so you can imagine it’s going to be quite a show.

“We’ve got evil crows trying to catch the girls, and it’s been a lot of fun putting it together.

“Getting to the finals is such a big thing for the kids and we just can’t wait to get there and perform.”
