A&E: What the experts are proposing

■ Primarily for safety and training reasons the accident and emergency department at the University Hospital of Hartlepool should close, but only when alternative services are available and understood;

■ NHS Hartlepool, GP commissioning consortia and North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust to work together in partnership with patient representatives to develop a single and clear set of proposals for urgent and emergency care;

■ A joint steering group, between the above NHS organisations and Hartlepool Borough Council’s Health Scrutiny Forum to be set up to steer the process forwards without unnecessary delay,

■ For further wide and transparent dialogue with the public about the future of all services in Hartlepool with sufficient detail for people to understand the ‘steps along the way’ as well as the end point ‘vision’.

■ See Wednesday’s’s Mail for a full breakdown of the report.
