Top tips for keeping your family healthy

A national charity is urging Hartlepool and East Durham people to spend today creating a healthy environment.

Today is World Heart Day and Heart Research UK is encouraging people to get into the full swing of it. Officials have come up with a series of tips.

A spokesman said: “Make evening meals a family affair. A meal can be whipped up in no time by getting the family to help prepare it and set the table.

“Make sure you turn off the TV over mealtimes and spend some quality time together.

“Make housework fun by getting everyone involved. Turn some music on and get the whole household cleaning. The house will be sparkling in no time, and dancing around with the vacuum cleaner is a great way to burn off calories.”

The charity also urged people to boost their daily step count by getting off the bus a stop or two earlier.

The spokesman added: “Make a habit of using the stairs instead of the lift and visit the toilets on a different floor where possible.

“Bring a packed lunch to work to avoid buying a ready meal or pre-packed lunch which could be high in salt, sugar and unhealthy saturated fats.”
