Help us to find heroes

WHAT a fantastic start we have had in our search to find the best in sporting heroes.

We are only two weeks into the quest to honour the town’s sporting stars through the Hartlepool Mail sports awards.

But we have already had entries from the world of boxing, netball, rugby, cycling and even cheerleading.

But we want more - and it is not just front line competitors that we want to enter.

We would love to give out awards to those behind-the-scenes stalwarts who do the work which ensures sport can happen in our great town.

It could be the caretaker who keeps the pitches up to scratch, the club secretary who makes sure everything is in order, or the treasurer who ensures the finances are in place.

It could be the rising young player who is making great strides in their chosen sport.

We know there are still plenty of heroes of football, cricket, rugby and many other sports back home in Hartlepool.

We want to honour the people who make our town the envy of the country.

Over the years, Hartlepool has regularly produced winners in boxing, golf, swimming, athletics and lots more besides.

In fact, it doesn’t matter which sport you compete in – we want to hear from you all.

This is only the second year that we have run our sports awards and our inaugural event was a winner.

But we want to make the 2014 version even bigger and better.

From the best in disabled sportspeople to grass roots performers, from coaches to teams – we want to honour them all.

Over the next few weeks, we shall be featuring stories on some of the nominations.

Then it’s over to the judges to draw up a shortlist before the glittering finale in early October.

There’s a long way to do before we get to that stage - and that means there’s plenty of time for you to come forward with your favourities.
