HARD-WORKING history hunters in Elwick are putting pen to paper as they produce a book on their findings.
A team of researchers making up the Elwick Village Atlas Group have been digging into the village’s past.
Archeological digs and geological surveys have been carried out in the village while the group have also combed through dozens of old maps and photographs and footage of Elwick from years gone by.
Residents have also recorded their own memories of the village as the group looks at how life in the village has changed over the years.
And now the members are all hard at work in the writing and producing stage of the book, which is expected be ready and available by May this year.
Brain Footitt, chairman of the Elwick Village Atlas Group, said: “We have had a great response from residents throughout the project.
“When we have held open days we have had around 50 people turning out which has been absolutely great.”
Another event organised by the group is now in the pipeline as the members plan to hold a launch for the new book.
Brian, 68, who lives in the village, said: “I do think this is a really important project.
“We have made some fascinating discoveries and it’s been a joy for everyone who’s played a part.
“It’s leaving a legacy for residents in the village in future years.
“For those who want to find out about the history of Elwick in 20 or 30 years time the book will hopefully be a very useful research point for them.”
The group will confirm plans of the launch event closer to the time.
