ENERGY bosses hope to restore power to homes in a former mining village as soon as possible after residents spent most of Thursday without electricity.

Power was lost in the Sunderland Road area of Horden at 7.15pm on New Year’s Day.

Northern Powergrid bosses say the fault is believed to be due to a complex underground fault.

Thirty homes in Sunderland Road, Northumberland Street and North Avenue are affected.

The firm took the unusual step of providing a customer service van, which is parked in North Avenue and offering hot drinks and somewhere to charge mobile phones and other appliances.

Bosses apologised for any inconvenience and said they hoped to restore power by 8pm on Thursday.
